1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-487, Pollock-576, Low R.7

The obverse centers around the bust of Lincoln in profile, facing right. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA circles the bust above, with the date below. The reverse shows the denominational figure 5 above the word CENTS, encircled by a large wreath, with IN GOD WE TRUST above. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

The currently offered pattern was a sentimental favorite with collectors when it was created. Lincoln was martyred the year before, and memories of him were still fresh in the public mind. The issue is the only pattern design featuring an image of Lincoln produced in the 19th century.

The fields show only a moderate number of handling marks for the grade. The issue was struck on thin planchets (58 grains) and thick planchets (72 grains). The present example is a thin planchet, weighing in at 60 grains.
