$2.50 Quarter Eagle "Two Hair Bands" Patterns

On the obverse the head of Liberty faces left, with the Latin motto around and date 1878 below. Liberty's hair is tied in a bun, and she wears a hair band inscribed LIBERTY, with a second band further back in the hair with a leafy design. On the reverse an overlarge eagle fills the center, with small UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 2½ DOLLARS at the rim. Struck on thinner, wider (20.5-mm vs. 18-mm) planchets than the regular issue, in copper, gilt, with a reeded edge.
