THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL DOLLAR DESIGNS HAVE BEEN REVEALED
Let the hype begin as the first 2008 Presidential Dollar depicting James Monroe is issued on Feb. 14, 2008. The John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin will follow May 15. Then look for the Andrew Jackson Presidential $1 Coin on August 14 and the Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 Coin on November 13.

Ebay will have a few sellers looking for any and every imperfection, in order to confuse the uniformed buyer into paying more for the coins. So, BEWARE! Make sure the seller is reputable, and answers emails promptly about their coin. Sometimes it's better to wait on supposed mint errors to ensure it doesn't become common a few months after release. During your wait, check out news articles and PCGS auctions to see if they have authenticated any examples.

COIN NEWS FACTS
Sacagawea Dollar: Congress has approved legislation for the US Mint to strike 2008 Sacagawea Dollars, and beginning in 2009 the Sacagawea Dollar will be minted with the same obverse design, but with a different reverse design; each will represent contributions of Native Americans to our heritage.

James Monroe Dollar: An unstruck (blank planchet) Monroe Dollar has been discovered by Ken Sigler, owner of Cinnaminson Rare Coins, but the edge of the coin has edge lettering. It's not clear how this occurred since the mint strikes all sides of the coin in the same process beginning this year; a response to the edge lettering errors of 2007. Obviously, we are witnessing the birth of a brand new error type.

US Coin Alloys: Legislation has been introduced that could result in the alteration of the metal content and size of business strike coins. This legislation was introduced due the rising value of base metals; presently a cent cost 1.67 cents to produce and a nickel cost 9.5 cents. It would save nearly 600 million over the next ten years. One interesting provision in the legislation calls for a new steel cent, plated in copper.

The 2000-P Extra Beard Penny, Doubled Die Error Is Condemned
Error and variety coin experts have come to the collective conclusion that the so-called 2000-P "extra beard" doubled die penny error should be "de-listed," or removed from their official rosters of variety coin types. The error came to light a couple of months ago, when a specimen was found that seemed to have a section of doubling on the upper portion of Lincoln's neck, along the beard. The marks match portions of the beard design well enough that Ken Potter, Billy Crawford, John Wexler, and other variety coin experts had listed it in their files as a doubled die. Since the apparent doubled marks could be seen with the naked eye, it was an exciting find, and collectors across the country began hunting for more.

Faceless Monroe Dollar
Coin collector Garrett Reich, a dedicated coin-roll searcher, has found an extremely rare Monroe Presidential Dollar error - a so-called "Faceless Dollar." The Faceless Dollar is the cute moniker given to a blank Presidential Dollar planchet that has edge lettering around it. Before Reich made his find, only one Faceless Dollar specimen was known to exist among the one billion or so Presidential Dollars that have been minted thus far, the Smith Specimen found by Ray and Mary Smith in Colorado shortly after the Washington Dollar plain edge errors were discovered. There is even believed to be a third Faceless Dollar out there now, on its way to PCGS for examination. Read entire story
