Nine distinct classes of 1870 dime patterns are known, including seven Standard Silver issues such as the current offering. The first eight of the nine dime groups comprise six variations: silver, copper, and aluminum, each with either a reeded or plain edge. The result is a total of 51 different dime patterns dated 1870--more than any other year by a wide margin.
